Sports

Contact sports pose a risk to teeth, the jaw, and more. We encourage our patients to wear a custom fitted mouthguard designed for their unique oral structure. Patients of all ages who engage in contact sports can benefit from a mouthguard made according to their needs. Some mouthguards may be made with developing teeth or orthodontia in mind, others may be very strong, intended for the professional athlete. For optimal effectiveness, mouthguards should be customized by your dentist.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding, called bruxism, is something you may not realize you do. Most people who grind or clench their teeth excessively do so while they sleep. Bruxism may be related to stress or other factors. Whatever the cause, we provide care that can minimize discomfort and the potential for tooth damage. If not treated, teeth grinding could lead to dental issues such as:
  • Difficulty chewing or opening and closing the mouth
  • Discomfort in the muscles and joints of the jaw
  • Worn or cracked teeth
  • Chronic head and neck pain
  • Chronic earaches or ringing in the ears

If you suspect that you may grind your teeth, Cerés Dental Clinic can help. We will begin with a full assessment that will provide us with the information we need to customize care to your needs. Treatment for teeth grinding may involve:
  • Balancing the bite with orthodontics
  • Short term use of anti-inflammatory medication
  • Oral appliance therapy with an occlusal splint
  • Physical therapy exercise to reduce stiffness and improve strength in the muscles of the jaw
